A Heartfelt Experience at HCA Oasis@Outram Day Hospice

Updated: Apr 1

At Kudos by Headlines Hairdressing, we believe hair care transcends mere grooming; it embodies dignity, confidence, and overall well-being.

Recently, I, Ken, had the chance to take part in a charity haircut event at HCA Oasis@Outram Day Hospice.

Volunteering in a hospice for the first time, I initially had a different perception of what it would be like. I anticipated encountering frail patients, people unable to communicate, or a somber environment. However, my actual experience was quite the opposite.

A Place of Warmth and Life

The moment we entered the centre, I was taken aback—it was nothing like I had imagined. Instead of a bleak environment, we stepped into a warm, vibrant, and beautifully designed space. Frances, from HCA’s Volunteer Management and Engagement team, greeted us warmly and gave us a tour of the facility.

One of the first places she showed us was the Spalon, Oasis@Outram’s haircutting station. To our delight, it was like an actual salon equipped with a large mirror, two chairs, and even a hair-washing basin. A manicure section was next, reinforcing the centre's commitment to ensuring the patients receive proper care and attention.

As we explored further, we discovered even more wonderful spaces—an indoor greenhouse filled with natural sunlight, a cosy movie theatre, a games room, a custom-built room for paediatric patients, and even a bar at the heart of the centre. The presence of a bakery oven added an extra touch of warmth. Everything about Oasis@Outram exuded a sense of

comfort and positivity.

The Power of a Haircut

Once we had taken in the surroundings, it was time to get to work. The patients we met were lively and full of warmth. Contrary to what I initially believed, many looked healthy and carried a joyful spirit. Only later, during our conversations, I realised most of them were in the final stages of their lives—some with just a few months left.

Yet, despite this reality, they exuded an incredible sense of strength. One of the elderly patients, in a clear and firm voice, spoke to me about Singapore's slowing economy. He advised me not to give up and to keep pushing forward in my business. "Jia You," he said with encouragement. That moment left me speechless. Here was someone who knew his time was limited, yet he cheered me on. It was a powerful reminder that true resilience comes from within, nurtured by a caring and supportive environment.

Commitment to Professionalism and Compassion

Providing haircuts in a hospice setting requires a different level of care, patience, and understanding. Quester and I approached each patient professionally, ensuring they felt at ease. Every haircut was tailored to their needs, whether a simple trim or a more styled cut. Our goal was to make them look good and help them feel good about themselves.

A haircut is more than just grooming; it is a form of self-care. Many of these patients may not have had the opportunity to visit a salon for a long time, so we wanted to bring that experience to them. Watching their smiles in the mirror and feeling their happiness was the most rewarding part of the day.

Gratitude and Reflection

Reflecting on this experience later that night, I realised how much this visit had changed my perspective. It wasn't just about cutting hair—it was about human connection, dignity, and showing care in the simplest yet most meaningful ways. The staff at Oasis@Outram play a crucial role in ensuring the patients live their days with joy and comfort. Their dedication is truly admirable.

I also want to thank my charity team—Quester, Mervyn, and Veyron. When I first suggested this initiative, I asked them if they were comfortable volunteering. Without hesitation, they all gave the green light. This unwavering support and willingness to give back remind me how lucky I am to have such a dedicated team of friends.

Looking Ahead

At Kudos by Headlines Hairdressing, we strive to make a difference beyond our salon walls. This initiative reaffirmed our belief that small acts of kindness can profoundly impact people's emotional and mental well-being.

We look forward to future opportunities to extend our support to more daycare centres, elderly care facilities, and individuals in need. Every haircut carries a story, and we are honoured to be part of these moments.

To the team at HCA Oasis@Outram Day Hospice—thank you for welcoming us and for your incredible work. To our community—thank you for your continued support. Together, we can make a difference, one haircut at a time.
