Dyson Corrale CoolShine: Our Experience at the Dyson Hair Show Singapo

On the 29th of September our team got the pleasure of attending the Dyson Hair Show in Singapore, where we were given a demonstration of the new Dyson Corrale CoolShine™ straightener.

It was a pleasure to be invited to join professionals from Singapore's hair and beauty industry, and we were even more enthusiastic about being chosen among the salons to have the opportunity to try out Dyson's newest straightening technology.

To us the launch was especially interesting since anti-frizz, rebonding, keratin treatments and hair-smoothing treatments are something that we specialise in at KUDOS by Headlines Hairdressing.

We were able to understand why Dyson has adopted a different approach to traditional hair straightening after having seen the Corrale CoolShine in action at the show.

More Than 20 Models Styled with the New Corrale CoolShine

A notable feature of the Dyson Hair Show in Singapore was the opportunity to see the new technology being used in a real professional styling setting.

During the programme, over twenty models were styled with the new Dyson Corrale CoolShine, displaying a variety of hair textures, lengths and final appearances.

Instead of just looking at the product being displayed, we watched it function as a styling tool when used by professional hairstylists.

Since we are hairstylists, this point is important.

A good professional hair straightening iron should go beyond simply straightening the hair; we assess it in terms of how well it controls the hair, the number of passes it requires, the amount of heat it uses, the final texture and shine it gives, and most important of all, how the desired result can be obtained without compromising the condition of the hair.

What is it that makes the Dyson Corrale CoolShine different?

The main difference lies in what occurs right after you have applied the heat.

Traditional straightening irons mostly use heat and tension in order to reshape the hair, while the Corrale CoolShine adds a new factor to the process: active cooling.

The CoolShine attachment, which is removable, has copper pipes designed to extract excess heat from the hair as soon as it has passed through the heated plates.

In simple terms:

The shape of the hair is affected by heat → CoolShine gets rid of the excess heat → the hair cools right away after it has been styled.

Dyson states that the technology can reduce heat damage by as much as 29% when compared to using the product without the heat-extracting attachment and at the same time produce up to 154% more shine than hair that has not been treated.

The hair is also noticeably cooler when you touch it after every pass.

Why Cooling After Straightening Is Interesting to Us

In the view of a professional hairstylist, the aspect of CoolShine technology that interests us most is this one.

Since heat is used in a great many professional methods of straightening and smoothing hair, we still aim to reduce any unnecessary or repeated heat exposure—especially in the case of fine, coloured, bleached, or chemically treated hair.

The CoolShine method is interesting since instead of just using more heat, Dyson is considering how heat, tension and cooling can work together when styling.

For a salon such as ours, which in Singapore regularly offers anti-frizz and hair straightening services, this approach is very sensible.

Flexing Plates for Better Control and Fewer Passes

The Corrale CoolShine also makes use of Dyson's flexing plate technology.

Rather than having completely rigid plates, the plates are designed to flex around the hair section, thus helping to collect and hold the hair strands together as the iron passes through them.

This gives better control and means that you will need to pass the iron over the same area repeatedly less often.

When carrying out professional hairdressing work,it is especially important to avoid unnecessary passes if the hair has already been chemically treated.

Four Temperature Settings for Different Hair Types

Another useful feature is the choice of four temperature settings:

145°C • 165°C • 185°C • 210°C

The same temperature is not necessary for different types of hair.

Hair which is fine, sensitive, or has already been treated may need a totally different method from that used with thick, resistant, curly, or coily hair.

More exact temperature settings allow the stylist to control the amount of heat used according to the condition of the hair and the result they are aiming for.

The CoolShine takes about 15 seconds to heat up, which makes it suitable for professional styling.

More Than Just a Straightening Iron

Although it is a product designed for straightening hair, the Corrale CoolShine is not only capable of producing one kind of finish.

It can be used for straightening, shaping, creating waves, and making curls.

To get smooth and straight hair styles, use the cooling attachment, and if you want curls and waves then remove it.

The variety of styles produced on over 20 models at the Dyson Hair Show showed how versatile a single styling tool can be.

What does this mean for keratin, rebonding and anti-frizz treatments?

The Corrale CoolShine is especially relevant to our salon here.

At KUDOS by Headlines Hairdressing we offer custom anti-frizz and hair-smoothing treatments, such as keratin treatments, rebonding, and other straightening services.

Heat may be used as part of the process, but the right temperature, technique and number of passes should always be based on the type of treatment being given and, most important of all, on the condition of the client's hair.

The idea of combining controlled heating, bending the plates, and then immediately cooling them therefore has great potential for use by professionals in anti-frizz and hair-smoothing work.

We also think that the tool alone is only one element of a successful straightening service.

It is still very important to understand the state of one's hair and to select the right treatment, formulation, temperature, and technique.

There is no one temperature or one method of straightening that will fit all types of hair.

Which is why a professional hair assessment still plays such an important role in our anti-frizz and hair smoothing services.

Dyson and the Professional Hair Industry

What else struck us was Dyson's readiness to interact with hairstylists and other people who work directly with different types of hair on a daily basis.

The Hair Show provided a gathering place for professionals coming from both the salon and beauty industries, and the selected salons also got the chance to have a closer experience of and try out the new Corrale CoolShine.

It demonstrates for us a greater effort to understand not just what consumers want from a styling tool but also what professionals need when they are sitting behind the chair.

Each day as hairstylists we have to deal with all kinds of real hair problems—such as frizz, humidity, damage, hair that is resistant, fine hair, bleached hair and hair that has been chemically treated.

We are pleased to note that the technology has been developed with these real-world needs in mind.

Our Next Step: Testing CoolShine in the Salon

The fact that the Corrale CoolShine was used throughout the Hair Show was impressive, but for us the most important test remains one of how the tool performs in an actual salon environment.

We look forward to carrying out a more in-depth investigation into the Corrale CoolShine and finding out how it might be used as part of our professional anti-frizz, hair smoothing and straightening work.

We'll focus on how the product performs under various hair conditions, the level of control it provides, the final shine and texture it gives, and the way the cooling technology affects the entire straightening experience.

As professionals providing anti-frizz treatments in Singapore, we’re excited to see technology moving towards something we strongly believe in:

Getting hair that is smoother, shinier, and easier to manage by being more careful about the use of unnecessary heat and the damage it causes.

Thank you, Dyson Singapore, for inviting us to be part of the experience.
